CHAPTER 10

STERILE LOADING OF RADIOACTIVE MATERIALS INTO NEEDLES

In general, the needles are manually loaded, one at a time, with seeds and spacers. This may be accomplished with forceps, as described below, or using one of the newer seed loading devices emerging onto the market. Standard Imaging, of Middleton, WI, makes a "Seed Slider" loading aid which has been getting good reviews on the MEDPHYS list server, and I was much impressed with their vaccuum loading system last summer at the AAPM meeting. The basic steps are still the same. The needles, seeds, spacers, work area, tools, and person performing the loading are all sterile. The loaded needles are then placed in a sterile shielded container, laid out in the same pattern as they will be inserted into the grid, until time for the implant.

Remember, by regulation, the needles cannot be left unattended
in the OR once they are loaded.
